The following alphabetical chart will give you an idea of the flavors and aromas of some of the most popular wine grape varietals and the wines made from those grapes.

Red Grape Varietals

  • Barbera – red plum and red cherry
  • Cabernet Franc – ripe raspberry, pencil shavings, herbs
  • Cabernet Sauvignon – black currant, blackberry, cedar
  • Carignan – black plum, black pepper
  • Carmenere – cherry, red plum
  • Gamay – ripe raspberry, strawberry, often banana
  • Gamay Beaujolais – raspberry
  • Garnacha – also known as Grenache – very ripe mixed berries
  • Malbec – blackberry, black plum, dried fruit
  • Mourvedre – blackberry, game, leather
  • Napa Gamay – mixed berries, violet
  • Petit Sirah (Syrah) – red currant
  • Petit Verdot – black pepper, mixed spices, black currant
  • Pinot Noir – ripe raspberry, ripe or canned strawberry
  • Sangiovese – cherry
